Lighting Kits Studio portrait shooting novice, may I help you buy?

I would like to explore self-portrait photography and I'm in lighting equipment needs. I wondered if I help you buy the BH website Photovideo best, not too expensive (student budget) kit. I'ma big Cindy Sherman fan, and I will be myself from making the field. I'll be dressed and posed in different ways. For now I will shoot with a white background, which is a sheet (if opposed to this, I would like your advice too.) Do not you think the softbox is good for a beginner / target practice? Just a suggestion, drop white sheet, get some neutral pastel colors, white will play with all your other questions as if there were no tomorrow.
