How Lightroom and Photoshop are really useful?

I'm just in the photograph - and recently picked up a digital SLR. I am taking photos that are emerging out fine - but my friends always insist on the photographer of each photo editing in Photoshop or Lightroom. Just curious -- I understand that this is a kind of big question - but you can do simple. Thanks in advance.

Shooting with a digital camera is just the start of process making the picture. With the film that took the photos and sent the film to the lab ... they did the processing and printing your images.
