Is there a difference between a man and a photographer Man?

Since I started my career as a photographer Israel's fashion and advertising that have made this question. Every time I interviewed about my work in fashion photography and advertising, this is the main theme. And I also sometimes wonder if my career would have been different if I were a man and not a woman photographer.

My answer is changing all the time and still I feel that I have not reached a final conclusion yet.

When I started as a professional photographer in the late 80s, insisted that no difference between a man and a photographer. However, the first time I was interviewed for an exhibition at the Israel Museum, who admitted that there were very few photographers active women in Israel. But now there were not many independent or self-employed women in other areas of the business in general.

I was and I am still very determined, so have always been offered in major campaigns and complex productions. I've always felt that I have more physical strength and endurance that my male colleagues. I'm really not a giant, but especially at the beginning of my career, it was my strong will and strong work ethic that made me work 20 hours without stop and still be accurate in my work. I do not recommend working 20 hours straight one, but sometimes it happens.

And along the way, my two daughters were born. During the first pregnancy I worked all the way until the day she gave birth, I actually had to call a customer and cancel a session to go to hospital instead. During the second pregnancy my belly was much bigger and a month earlier than they should, and could hardly breathe, so they slowed down and let him rest. After each birth it took me about three weeks to return to work.

I did, because I love my job, it is very important for me to express myself creatively and maintain mental balance, but also for my personal ambitions. Many are difficult to define myself without my work. I was nursing each of my daughters for nine months with all sorts of tricks, while I was back in my studio full time, available for any project. I am not recommending this formula as the perfect thing for everyone, it was just my way.

Back then I started thinking that there is a difference between men and women photographers after all.

As a matter of fact, many women and few men photographers. So I started thinking about our differences ...

First, we have a different mentality.

Second, some women feel they really deserve the success, few women actually pursue their dreams and many of us still define themselves through the management of their homes and families.

Thirdly, there specific differences that are unique in the field of photography. Female photographers are much more willing to experiment for the sake of art, for his personal process, or just for curiosity and for the sake of trying something new.

But women are less focused on goals, so they are often perceived as less serious. So the big projects are often given to a male colleague at the same level. In Israel, for example, find more of women in the work of the journal and less in the commercial arena, which is much better paid.

This is because women refer to sex differently. Thus, in the commercial sector, whose message main sex, female point of view is less popular with advertising agencies and manufacturers of fashion simply because it is more complex and multidimensional.

But today, in 2008, the point of view of the fashion industry has expanded and many mixed messages campaign issue and not just "being nice and showing a face sexy "message. Another issue is the technical question - many Girls tend to be techno phobic, some even consider it a fad. Unfortunately, this means that women from society for as technically incompetent.

I is obvious that if a photographer comes to a session must be technically well in one way or another, since photography is a very technical process in itself and one must be familiar with different types of tools.

But even today, when I'm working on a big production, being in charge of a lot of people, someone always comes to my assistants asking if he is the photographer ... I am always amused, but it shows what most people really think: After all photography is a business for men.

Finally, networking is very important and most networks are still driven male. This is especially true for Israel, where many contacts are from the time the army ... women's networks are still very young, but growing.
