WARNING to all Photographers
Several photographers have reported inordinately slow payments — over 60 days to over 6 months — by Smith Advertising in Raleigh and Fayetteville, NC (also in Sarasota, FL), that include in some cases bounced checks of several thousand dollars.  This is no reflection on the creatives at the agency, as they are as frustrated as the photographers, but this is a warning that if you deal with Smith Advertising, you may want to get ample payment up front, establish a strong paper and/or electronic trail, and be persistent in your insistence on timely payment.

Please note, one of our ASMP/NC members has provided digital proof of both unresponsiveness to timely payment and a large bounced check.

We have also heard from a graphic designer who saw this notice on our website and wrote, sharing similar problems with Smith Advertising.

We heard from
ASMP/NC members, please peruse this website and feel free to make suggestions. After all, this is your site! Meanwhile, look for the little New! icons that indicate a new feature, page, or announcement. And for you photographers who are new to the area and/or wish to become part of a supportive photo group, join us. Check out our calendar and come to our meetings. Photographers have strength in numbers, to wit all the changes we have effected on copyright issues, landmark legal cases, and discounts we have negotiated for our association members, to name a few.

ASMP/North Carolina (ASMP/NC) is one of 40 chapters nationwide of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP), a trade organization that promotes photographers' rights, educates photographers in better business practices, and produces business publications for photographers.

ASMP was founded in 1944 by a handful of the world's leading photojournalists and is recognized internationally for its leadership role. Today, ASMP has over 5,000 members, including many of the world's greatest photographers. In addition to the many chapters, there are several special-interest groups that share information specific to their types of photography.

This ASMP/NC site serves as:
  • A communication tool;
  • A calendar of our chapter events;
  • A link between photographers within our chapter; and
  • A tool for buyers of photography (Find a NC Photographer).
At the national level, ASMP has three purposes:
  • To protect and promote the interests of photographers whose work is primarily publication;
  • To promote high professional standards and ethics; and
  • To cultivate friendship and mutual understanding between photographers.
The national ASMP web site provides additional services, including:
  • A resource tool for the technical, business and legal assistance photographers need to operate successfully;
  • A link between the chapter and all photographers;
  • A link among ASMP photographers themselves at national and/or local levels; and
  • A tool for buyers of photography.
Thanks

to Southeastern Camera & Studio who supports ASMP/NC at all our program meetings.
As you go through this site, get to know your fellow photographers. There is, indeed, strength in numbers as evidenced by the many things ASMP has accomplished for its membership and beyond.
